Studies hydrological controls on living communities, and in particular river networks as ecological corridors). He was Visiting Professor at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Princeton University (NJ, USA) (2004-2006), Visiting Professor and Research Associate, Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory, Civil and Environmental Engineering, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambdrige (MA, USA) (1992-2002). Since 2019 he is Hagler Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies of Texas A&M University and Neal E. Armstrong Distinguished Visiting Professor at Purdue University. Member of other Academies and Institutes of Culture including the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (2006), the American National Academy of Engineering (2006) and National Academy of Sciences (2011), and of the Accademia dei Lincei (2019). Winner of the Stockholm Water Prize 2023.
