President of the Superior Health Council (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS) since February 2019. He directs the Department of Onco-Hematology, Cell and Genic Therapy of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital. To his research we owe the technique that allows to use parents’ marrow cells making them compatible with those of the patient, already experimented on immunodeficiencies and genetic diseases, and recently extended to pediatric leukemia and blood cancers.
Since 2018 he has been full professor of pediatrics at the La Sapienza University of Rome, after having holded the same role at the University of Pavia for over 10 years. He was also an Honorary Clinic Visitor at Hammersmith Hospital in London. He is the author of more than 500 articles published in the most prestigious international journals.
