Beretta Simona

Simona Beretta is a full professor of Economic Policy at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. She teaches international economic disciplines such as International Economic Policies and International Economics, Money, and Finance. She graduated in 1978 from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and obtained an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1981. She taught Political Economy at the University of Parma from 1988 to 1991.
She is the Director of the Master’s Program in International Cooperation and Development at ASERI. She is a member of the Steering Committee of ASERI, the Graduate School of Economics and International Relations at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. She is also a Senior Researcher at the Center for Cognitive Sciences and Communication (CSCC) in the field of international integration and finance.
She is the Director of the University Center for the Social Doctrine of the Church and the responsible director of the journal “Dizionario di dottrina sociale della Chiesa. Le cose nuove del XXI secolo”.
She has been a visiting professor at ZEI, the Centre for European Integration at the University of Bonn, and at Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest. She has also been a visiting fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA, during the spring semester of 2016.
Scientific Activities and Collaborations
Her research activities aim to explore the connection between individuals, economy, politics, and practices, focusing on topics such as poverty reduction, the transformative potential of practices accompanying vulnerable people, international integration, and the proper functioning of the financial system. She is currently leading a University research project entitled “Working out of poverty. Accompanying the poor to become dignified agents of their development,” which emphasizes the importance of establishing lasting relationships to enable sustainable poverty eradication, with case studies in different countries (Jordan, Mexico, Italy).
She is a member of the Editorial Committee of the “Rivista Internazionale di Scienze Sociali”. She serves as the Convener of the Fetzer Advisory Board on the Social Sciences at the Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. She was a consultant for the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace from 2004 to 2016 and, since 2019, she has been a consultant for the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
She is a member of the Social Affairs Commission at COMECE in Brussels and a member of the Board of Directors of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano.
