The rocky churches of Matera
‘The phenomenon of the rocky churches is documented in various Mediterranean regions. The case of Matera (a town in the South of Italy) is particularly significant and unique. In that area more than one hundred and fifty churches, excavated in the rock and tuff, have been found. With their suggestive architecture and glamorous frescos, these churches date back to the first centuries of Middle Ages and particularly they developed from the 9th – 10th century on. The exhibition is edited by Marco Rossi and Alessandro Rovetta.’
