The life of Mary in art from the 14th to the 15th centuries

‘The exhibition documents the biography of the Virgin Mary through the recovery of the function of art as this was understood in the middle-ages: a means of education and catechism for communicating the truth of the Faith, assimilated through contemplation, meditation and the knowledge conveyed by symbols, colours and every other element forming a significant part of Marian iconography. Mary is, in history and in the painted image, Light: in her womb beats the life of the Saviour of us all, Light that frightens away the fear of the unknown, Splendour against which death (kingdom of darkness) will not be victorious; in Her the Verb has become incarnate and the Verb is Intelligence, it is Light, it is Certainty of truth, it is Mystery before which man stands amazed. The Virgin Mary with Her yes, represents the freedom of adhering to Mystery. This attitude opens for human beings the door of knowledge and allows them to discover the correspondence to their desires. The exhibition consists of 29 images taken from narrated episodes of the life of the Virgin Mary in the historical period covering the 14th and 15th centuries.’
