Maria Francesca Cabrini, born in 1850, was a religious and missionary known as Frances Xavier Cabrini. Sent by Pope Leo XIII to New York to assist the waves of Italian immigrants flooding Ellis Island, she proved to be extremely shrewd and determined. Highly skilled at opening hearts and wallets, she managed to found numerous hospitals and orphanages dedicated to Italian-Americans. She was the first American citizen to be canonized, in 1946. The cast includes well-known actors: Cristiana Dell’Anna, Giancarlo Giannini, David Morse, and John Lithgow.
