At this historical moment, we face an escalation of conflicts and wars that, until a few years ago, seemed unimaginable. The Holy Land itself is devastated by a conflict so deep that reconciliation appears utopian. Every day, the question dramatically arises: how is it possible to live with pain, suffering, and lack of prospects, facing hatred, violence, and indifference to evil? Is there a way that, amidst the most atrocious tribulations, can open a horizon of hope and share buds of peace?

MENTAL DISTRESS AND COMPASSION

The experience of suffering requires someone to share it. When Franco Basaglia arrived in Gorizia in 1961, he noticed the ugliness of the asylum, its brutality, and vulgarity. He found help to close an inhumane chapter. This happened in Trieste, where Michele Zanetti joined him, and together they began another story, this time made of recognizing human dignity, sharing, and openness. What does that revolutionary event teach us today? It continues to indicate the need for patience, closeness, and attention, which we find in new intervention practices, in the constant awareness of renewed humanity, in a delicate attempt at understanding, and in a shared programming between users, families, and operators. It is the experience of compassion by Franco Basaglia and many professionals today that transform psychiatry into an inclusive, dignified mental health project woven with inalienable rights.

INEQUALITY: THE PRICE WE ALL PAY

Economy is often thought to produce a kind of single thought starting from the paradigm of classical economics centered on the agent who maximizes consumption under budget constraints and the firm that maximizes profit given technologies. It is assumed that the historical form of the market economy that modern capitalism has taken should somehow lay the foundation for shared prosperity. In reality, this is not the case. Firstly, inequalities, particularly within countries, are increasing enormously. Moreover, the history of economic thought is much richer in reflections on how economic development brings inequalities and what policies need to be implemented to reduce them. We will discuss this with Professor Milanović, the world-renowned economist for his analyses of rising inequalities, who has recently enriched his work by revisiting the major classical economists to reveal their views on this topic; and we will ask the former President of the European Commission Barroso what economic and social policies have been implemented, in Europe and beyond, to address this problem.

Having an "incurable" disease does not coincide with being in an "untreatable" condition, meaning it is always possible to care for a person with a disease, even when chronic and progressive, or with disabilities. The care of life does not provide the sick person with an automatic answer to the "why" that arise, particularly to the "why" they found themselves in such a dramatic condition, which they did not choose. Care relationships can, however, support the patient's freedom in searching for meaning and the essential, a search that often erupts in a cry in moments characterized by such suffering that it can be annihilating. In the "common vulnerable humanity," as the nurse founder of palliative care Cicely Saunders said, the condition of those being cared for and those who care promotes a path of searching, which can become acceptance of the present moment and the blossoming of hope within a limit. It is as if certain "constraints," rather than limiting the expression of freedom, put it in the best conditions to express itself. The initiator of Italian Pediatric Palliative Care Franca Benini, and palliative oncologist Cristiano Ferrario will recount how, in their experience, there have been "care" of patients and families where a fascinating relationship and gaze occurred.

A text that combines praise to the Creator with praise for creatures. He dictates it to his companions so they can sing it, take it with them, offer it to themselves and the world. Today, 800 years later, those words continue to be a torch-text to be passed around, a breath-text to be shared in good and difficult times, a hymn to sisterhood and cosmic fraternity, an invitation to recognize the symphony of creation and the song that vibrates in each of our hearts.

From the pathways leading to the Global Gateway to the Mattei Plan, the urgency to build a new equal partnership between African and European countries emerges, aimed at fostering lasting and sustainable development for all. To make this possible, we must start from existing realities and success stories such as the SAY project, which will be presented in Rimini as a scalable and replicable model: a four-year project, implemented by AVSI and funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands, that has trained 18,000 young people in Uganda in the agricultural sector, giving them the opportunity to find dignified employment in the field, thanks to multiple partnerships with the private sector and an approach that places the individual at the center.

The exhibition “Servus Inutilis,” inaugurated at the Rimini Meeting, opens the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of his death, reflecting on his commitment and personal challenges.

“WHO ARE YOU? THE CHALLENGE OF JERUSALEM”. ORIGINAL THEATRICAL PRODUCTION. WITH ETTORE BASSI
Admission fee - Buy tickets The playwright Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt accepted the proposal to take a month-long trip to the Holy Land to recount his experience in a diary, thus the book "The Challenge of Jerusalem" was born. Now his voice, at times ironic and disillusioned, at times moved and revealing, becomes a narration on stage, leading the spectator on a physical journey, full of unexpected encounters and events, which soon reveals itself as a demanding inner journey. Bethlehem, Nazareth, and above all, Jerusalem: the city of contradiction, a place that speaks of coexistence, but also of unsolved tensions. With an unexpected reflection, made even more urgent by current events, the author investigates the city of the three monotheisms, searching among its streets full of history and suggestions for a credible word of peace. Schmitt's conversion to Christianity, initially born as a theoretical option, takes flesh in this journey to a mystical revelatory event experienced with transport during the visit to the Holy Sepulcher. The movement from the abstract to the human, which the writer must make in this journey of laborious sharing, is very similar to the path necessary for the coexistence of different beliefs: religions could abandon some abstract rigidity, accepting as necessary the different human traits that characterize them. The encounters and places, true co-protagonists of the staging, are evoked with live musical interventions, scenes, and projected images. The dramaturgy condenses the text, initially not conceived for the theater, into a montage of cinematic style that creates rhythm with the juxtaposition of evocative and narrative scenes. The challenge of Jerusalem is an opportunity to publicly express the complexity and urgency of the provocation that comes from the lands of Israel and Palestine. The intricate political contrast here takes on the universal tones of a narrative that seeks the essential in the tragedy, separating accidental factors from an indispensable charity for the human. Numerous and incisive are the questions that arise from the growing existential uncertainty of many young and not-so-young people, the fragmentation of social life, an unreliable future, and the increase in conflict and increasingly atrocious wars. Too often, those who let themselves be defined by these and other problems respond with distraction or resignation or with ideological aggression and stubbornness. But is it possible to find a horizon of meaning that allows us to face these challenges constructively, to find creative answers? It is in response to this emergency that we chose as the title of the 45th Rimini Meeting the provocation launched by the American author Cormac McCarthy: " If we are not after the essence, then what are we after".

Ending the war is not within our power, but building peace is, and that is something we can do. As Pope John XXIII's Pacem in Terris reminds us, peace is not just the absence of conflict but is based on four pillars: the exercise of truth, justice, freedom, and solidarity. The same pillars on which peace is built.

“WHO ARE YOU? THE CHALLENGE OF JERUSALEM”. ORIGINAL THEATRICAL PRODUCTION. WITH ETTORE BASSI
Admission fee - Buy tickets The playwright Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt accepted the proposal to take a month-long trip to the Holy Land to recount his experience in a diary, thus the book "The Challenge of Jerusalem" was born. Now his voice, at times ironic and disillusioned, at times moved and revealing, becomes a narration on stage, leading the spectator on a physical journey, full of unexpected encounters and events, which soon reveals itself as a demanding inner journey. Bethlehem, Nazareth, and above all, Jerusalem: the city of contradiction, a place that speaks of coexistence, but also of unsolved tensions. With an unexpected reflection, made even more urgent by current events, the author investigates the city of the three monotheisms, searching among its streets full of history and suggestions for a credible word of peace. Schmitt's conversion to Christianity, initially born as a theoretical option, takes flesh in this journey to a mystical revelatory event experienced with transport during the visit to the Holy Sepulcher. The movement from the abstract to the human, which the writer must make in this journey of laborious sharing, is very similar to the path necessary for the coexistence of different beliefs: religions could abandon some abstract rigidity, accepting as necessary the different human traits that characterize them. The encounters and places, true co-protagonists of the staging, are evoked with live musical interventions, scenes, and projected images. The dramaturgy condenses the text, initially not conceived for the theater, into a montage of cinematic style that creates rhythm with the juxtaposition of evocative and narrative scenes. The challenge of Jerusalem is an opportunity to publicly express the complexity and urgency of the provocation that comes from the lands of Israel and Palestine. The intricate political contrast here takes on the universal tones of a narrative that seeks the essential in the tragedy, separating accidental factors from an indispensable charity for the human. This combined system favors the development of Made in Italy. However, the current trend of involving poorly controlled foreign productions puts working conditions at risk. Development on Italian territory would allow greater control of the supply chain and higher quality, although at higher costs. The issue of subcontracting often delegates responsibilities to small companies that may not fully comply with the standards. It is essential to identify what makes Made in Italy of quality and sanction those who do not respect labor rules, as the focus remains on the dignity of work.

The state's administration, however, has the task of translating political decisions into operational ones; it is moreover constituted by different dimensions, from the central to the peripheral level, closer to the citizen. The capacity of PA managers thus also depends on the most constructive aspects of social and economic life in a territory. The attractiveness of a territory, the reliability of a central or peripheral structure, attention to the person, and growth are central elements for good administration. We will ask our interlocutors to testify how the "good face of PA" can emerge.

One of the most fascinating areas of contemporary astrophysics is understanding how the laws of nature and the physical and chemical conditions of the universe have led to the formation of the Earth, the solar system, and the countless planetary systems around distant stars. Thanks to new instruments from both the ground and space, we are now able to directly observe the birth of new planets and gather detailed information about the surprising variety and richness that characterize planetary systems outside our solar system. Guided by two of the leading figures in the field at an international level, we will be introduced to some recent discoveries, thanks to which we are beginning to understand the process of the birth and evolution of planets, thereby also broadening our perspective on the origins of the planet we inhabit.

In the African continent, non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases are on the rise due to unhealthy eating behaviors and lifestyles, including dietary imbalances caused by foods of poor nutritional value and excessive carbohydrates (WHO, 2022). This is a significant challenge for the sustainable growth of the African continent and the health of its population. In this context, international development cooperation can play a crucial role by bringing together knowledge and expertise in the medical and agricultural fields. The re-discovery of traditional agricultural products, considered more nutritious and resilient to climate change, the higher nutraceutical value of traditional recipes, the adoption of healthier and more balanced diets, as well as the prevention and treatment of diseases are all aspects that – if addressed holistically – can improve the health conditions and well-being of rural communities in Africa, particularly those that are fragile and vulnerable. At the same time, strengthening the food-health nexus can help address the main challenges for children's food security and their growth. Maria Francesca Cabrini, born in 1850, was a religious and missionary known as Frances Xavier Cabrini. Sent by Pope Leo XIII to New York to assist the waves of Italian immigrants flooding Ellis Island, she proved to be extremely shrewd and determined. Highly skilled at opening hearts and wallets, she managed to found numerous hospitals and orphanages dedicated to Italian-Americans. She was the first American citizen to be canonized, in 1946. The cast includes well-known actors: Cristiana Dell'Anna, Giancarlo Giannini, David Morse, and John Lithgow. "Acqua" is a tragicomedy in a single act. In an imaginary seaside town, with a dam rising behind it, it has been raining non-stop for days. The group is joined by the town's dignitaries, mainly concerned with calming people down about the water threat. Bar chatter turns into accusations and fake news. "Acqua" is a tragicomedy in a single act. In an imaginary seaside town, with a dam rising behind it, it has been raining non-stop for days. In the bar of the main square, a group of friends take refuge and get lost in chatter, amid small spites and gossip, while the water level on the streets rises inexorably. The group is joined by the town's dignitaries, mainly concerned with calming people down about the water threat. Bar chatter turns into accusations and fake news. Why does everyone know Saint Francis? Why is he so irresistible? What made him special was that he was an artist. Perhaps the greatest in history. His sermons were insane and visionary masterpieces. They were contemporary theater performances. He played with elements of nature, improvised in French, quoting from the chanson de geste, twisting their meanings, using his body, nudity, even his own illness, physical pain, and muteness. The monologue, orchestrated with medieval hymns and ancient instruments by Luciano di Giandomenico, Maurizio Picchiò, and Stefano Carloncelli, questions the enormous persuasive power of the pop figure of Francis on contemporary audiences and traces the life of the poor man of Assisi and his obsessive effort to narrate the mystery of God in every form. No one in history has narrated God with such creative genius. Francis knew how to enchant the public, massive crowds, making them laugh, cry, sing, and dance. And then the grand finale, death, the fraternal, almost carnal relationship Francis had with Sister Death, from whom no living man can escape. The crucial role of women in accessing Water, developing agriculture (Earth), energy supply (Fire), and combating climate change (Air). Through a conversation with women from African countries or engaged in partnerships with these countries, the session aims to deepen the role of women in valuing essential natural resources for development (water, land/agriculture, air/climate, fire/energy) and understand the barriers they face in accessing these resources due to the strong discrimination faced by women, girls, and children in their contexts.

The event will provide an opportunity for discussion on the coffee sector in Africa, addressing challenges and solutions adopted by Italian Cooperation, the United Nations system, African intergovernmental counterparts, and the private sector. Additionally, the coffee project in Africa, initiated by Italian Cooperation together with UNIDO and private partners, will be presented. This project aims to improve the resilience of coffee to climate change, increase its value, and support the socio-economic development of local communities. The project leverages the experience accumulated in previous interventions by Italian Cooperation and the expertise of the Italian coffee supply chain, involving companies and specialized training and research centers.

In this multi-stakeholder dialogue, various parties involved will share their perspectives to understand how to best proceed towards sustainable development for all. The agreement signed by AVSI with the Tunisian government to initiate job training projects for Tunisian citizens to be employed in Italian companies will be presented; the needs and difficulties of businesses and those offering training programs will be discussed.

With reflections from professionals in the justice sector, the proposed dialogue intends to highlight the stages of a journey where the experienced drama can reveal itself as a factor of repentance and conversion, showing the Church's specific contribution in resisting structures of sin and mafia power, as recalled by Saint John Paul II in Agrigento and Pope Francis in Palermo.

The approval of the law on Non-Cognitive Skills finally opens the possibility for recognized and state-promoted didactic experimentation of what many teachers already practice. Mental openness, collaboration, goal-oriented work, confidence, conscientiousness, openness to experience... these are skills that can be educated with dedicated programs increasingly in demand in the labor market. The approval of the law also introduces a new relationship between the school world and the labor market in view of this type of training.

"It takes a village to educate" is the title of the concluding meeting of this year's Meeting in Rimini, with the participation of Rose Busingye and Sister Zeph. This statement, often recalled by Pope Francis, highlights the importance of communion and community in education: the entire village is necessary to raise a person. Rose Busingye, a nurse working in the Ugandan slums, testifies how the encounter with Monsignor Luigi Giussani made her discover that she was loved, relaunching her relationship with hundreds of women affected by HIV. Women cursed by society were reborn in their encounter with the nurse and wanted to build generative places for their children and the children of Uganda, so they could know their infinite value. Sister Zeph, winner of the 2023 Global Teacher Prize, founded a school for poor children in her backyard in Pakistan at the age of 13, creating vital educational places. Two extraordinary stories showing how education is offering one's life and the essential that the human heart seeks, in a responsibility that requires sharing and the commitment of entire communities.

In the epochal change we are experiencing, work is also undergoing profound transformations, not only in terms of modalities (smart work, short work weeks, artificial intelligence, etc.) but also in terms of meaning and value for everyone: workers and entrepreneurs alike. The phenomena of burnout, the great resignation, presenteeism, the difficulty in hiring, engaging, retaining, and motivating people are symptoms of the same malaise stemming from work that no longer satisfies. To once again become an expressive value of the person, work must be re-conceived by both businesses and workers. The Good Work Manifesto, which we will present and share with three key figures of this new phase, aims to be an initial proposal in this direction.

NEW ORCHESTRA SANTA BALERA
An orchestra of young musicians made up of 15 artists, including musicians and ballroom dancers, representatives of Generation Z from Emilia-Romagna. The orchestra performed with Mirko Casadei, son of Raoul, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the song "Romagna Mia," in tribute to the "Angels of the Mud" from the May 2023 flood, and on the second night of the 74th Sanremo Festival.
